Audiobook patronage poll

Recent changes in audio book sales and royalties calculations have meant that the amount retained by the platforms, after production costs, has gone from ‘everything’ to ‘quite a bit more than everything’ and, sadly and bluntly, the current model for Anty Boisjoly audio books is no longer viable.

There may be a way, however, of not only keeping audio books in production but reducing the cost by cutting out the middleman.

The proposal is pre-production pre-orders. Essentially, listeners buy the audio book before it exists, and when the cost of production has been raised, the book is produced and backers get early access. The investment would be less than the cost of a single month of Audible and each title would need slightly over 200 backers to get made, but if the target isn’t reached then everyone would get their money back.

This little poll is intended to gauge whether or not we should try this new method. I’d really appreciate your honest views.

  1. I would definitely do this. You could also consider Book Funnel. Caimh McDonnel makes all his Dublin trilogy audiobooks available through there.

  2. Book Funnel is an excellent audiobook distribution platform if that helps. Caimh McDonnell uses it for his Dublin Trilogy books and it works great from the user side at least. I really hope Anty and eventually Teddy get the full audiobook treatment for all their adventures!!

  3. yes, book funnel is excellent and we know what a mess audible always makes of getting an anty book out. do consider this. would also agree to pre order plan but book funnel would seem easier. sara rosett uses it all the time since a fiasco with audible. both her murder on location, high society lady detective series.

    • I think in the last day I have, indeed, settled on Book Funnel, and I’m very grateful for the suggestion.
The proposal is starting to look like Ko-Fi to raise the funds for production and Book Funnel for distribution.
I’m still studying it but Book Funnel seems very appealingly uncomplicated.

      • But I have audible. Does book funnel mean I’d need a new subscription – or I can pre-order and just listen to this when funds make sense?

      • What an excellent point. I think the answer would have to be yes – once the production costs had been realised and the book recorded it would be distributed by Book Funnel without any further cost or subscription. In time, it would be available on Audible, too, for those that prefer it.
Thank you for raising the question. It will be added to the overall plan.

      • Having never heard of Book Funnel before today, I’m hoping that means a proprietary player isn’t required. I’m pretty sure that Audible will exist into my future, and I’ve already (sadly?) climbed into that ecosystem.

I’ve really enjoyed all the Cory Doctorow audio books (that I purchased through his Kickstarters), and I can listen to them on all my devices, since they are using an open standard format.

It’s really sad to hear that Enshittification has come for Audible authors as well. I love listening to your books, and hear Tim Bruce’s voice in my head when I’m reading one!

      • I appreciate you raising the point, on which I have since become expert…
BookFunnel has an app, but we don’t have to use it – we can also stream audiobooks in a browser or download the (open standard) files.
Furthermore, after some suitable passage of time, the titles would make their slow, grudging way to the platforms, including Audible.

  4. any way you can get the books to audio will be fine with me. just try to manage it as they are so brilliant.

    betsy

  5. Can’t imagine life without Anty!!! And Tim Bruce just brings him to life. I preorder the books on Kindle, why wouldn’t I do the same on Audible.

  6. This is a great idea. I have bought all your audiobooks and will pay full price sound unheard. And they will be available on Libby afterward, too. That will bring in more fans!

  7. Honestly, happy to purchase, preorder, whatever in any form to keep the audiobook verions coming.

  8. Anything that keeps the wonderful audio versions going I’m happy to support. I wouldn’t have picked up the first book if I hadn’t listened to the audio version.
